The National Assembly, comprising 342 members, witnessed a multi-faceted electoral approach. Out of these, 272 members were elected through first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies. Another 60 seats were reserved for women, while 10 were allocated for religious minority groups. The allocation of reserved seats employed proportional representation with a 5% electoral threshold. It’s important to note that the proportional representation was based on the number of seats won rather than the votes cast. To secure a simple majority, a political party needed to clinch a minimum of 137 seats.

The 2018 General Elections marked a significant shift in the electoral landscape due to the new delimitation of constituencies, a consequence of the 2017 Census of Pakistan. In response to the census results, the Parliament of Pakistan amended the constitution, allowing a one-time exemption for redrawing constituency boundaries. The new delimitation resulted in a varied distribution of constituencies across different regions. As of the notification issued on 5th March 2018, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) now comprises three constituencies, Punjab 141, Sindh 61, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 39, Balochistan 16, and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with 12 constituencies in the National Assembly.

A staggering 106 million people were registered to cast their votes for the National Assembly of Pakistan and the Provincial Assemblies. This massive voter turnout underscores the significance of civic engagement in shaping the country’s political trajectory.
